Trieste, June 18, 2025 – On the occasion of the first public release of images from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, INAF – Astronomical Observatory of Trieste is organizing an event open to the public on Monday, June 23, 2025, starting at 4:15 PM, at the Observatory headquarters. It will be a moment of scientific outreach and in-depth discussion dedicated to one of the most ambitious and innovative astronomical observatories in the world. The Rubin Observatory, located in the Chilean Andes, is the first major international observatory named after a woman, the scientist Vera Rubin. Through the LSST – Legacy Survey of Space and Time program, it will carry out an unprecedented mapping of the southern sky, providing crucial data for understanding the evolution of the universe, dark matter, dark energy, and transient events such as supernovae.
Welcoming guests will be Fabrizio Fiore, director of INAF – Astronomical Observatory of Trieste, who comments: “We are proud to be part of this historic scientific milestone. The Rubin Observatory is the result of an unprecedented international collaboration, and Italy, with INAF, is at the forefront of its realization. We invite all citizens to participate in this event to share together the wonder of discovery and the importance of global astronomical research.”
The evening's program:
- 4:15 PM – Welcome remarks by the Director of INAF Trieste, Fabrizio Fiore
- 4:25 PM – Presentation of the Rubin Observatory:
- The Telescope: Enrico Giro, an INAF technologist with direct experience at major international observatories, will illustrate the instrument's innovative engineering.
- The Observational Programs: Leo Girardi, a research director at INAF Padua, will talk about the LSST surveys and the Italian contribution to the project.
- The Science of Rubin: Alessandro Bressan, a professor at SISSA and a leading expert in stellar evolution, will describe the scientific impact of the observatory.
- 5:00 PM – Live connection from Chile for the unveiling of the first image from the Rubin Observatory, with real-time commentary by INAF researchers and a question-and-answer session with the public.
- 5:45 PM – Conclusion of the event.
Among the speakers will also be Kendall Shepherd, a SISSA PhD student and Junior Associate for Rubin-LSST, who will bring the perspective of the new generation of researchers involved in the project.
Admission is free until all seats are filled.
