The Earliest Galaxies Seen by ALMA and Webb. Conflicting Tales?

by Andrea Ferrara (Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, Italy)

Abstract: When did dust first appear on the cosmic scene? What were the sources that enable a fast dust enrichment of the interstellar medium of galaxies? Dust could not only affect the physical properties and the star formation history of pristine systems; it might at the same time affect their visibility and infrared emission. It is crucial and timely to investigate these important and yet unknown aspects of early galaxy formation and evolution. At a time at which ALMA has laid the foundations of our understanding, Webb seems to hint at a possibly conflicting scenario. These (apparent?) contradictions need to be solved in the framework of studies that combine theory, cosmological simulations and the most advanced IR/sub-mm observations. I will review the various open issues of this exciting, daily-changing field.
