Galaxy protoclusters: the golden synergy between observations and simulations

by Olga Cucciati (INAF - OAS Bologna)

Abstract: Galaxy protoclusters are crucial sites where to study how both dark matter and stellar mass build up in the early universe. Unfortunately, protoclusters are elusive targets. Due to the fact that they are defined by the nature of their descendants (i.e. their putative evolution into galaxy clusters), observational studies of protoclusters require, in synergy, an attentive comparison with simulations of structure and galaxy formation and evolution.  I will show a few preliminary analyses on how beautifully this synergy can work, applied to both galaxy surveys and single objects.
