Radial metallicity gradients traced by old (RR Lyrae) and young (classical Cepheids) stellar populations

Abstract: Variable stars are solid stellar tracers because we can estimate their individual distances with an accuracy better than 3% and we can also estimate either their individual ages or their age distribution. We plan to discuss recent findings on the metallicity gradient of the Galactic halo based on both high and low-resolution spectra of RR Lyrae stars. We will focus our attention on the early chemical enrichment (iron, alpha elements) when moving from the outskirts to the innermost Halo regions. In particular, we outline the impact of homogenous metallicity distributions to investigate long-standing astrophysical problems like the Oosterhoff dichotomy. Moreover, we also introduce recent findings concerning the use of calibrating Cepheids to trace the chemical enrichment an the kinematic structure of the Galactic thin disk.
