Modern software technologies for astronomical research: the QUBRICS and QSFit cases

Abstract: In this talk I will provide a short introduction to my activities at OATs, which are mainly focused on software development but whose applications range from the control software of VLT instruments, to advanced data analysis of large astronomical databases and to QSO spectral analysis.  Then I will focus on two recent projects and describe their applications:
- QUBRICS is a survey aimed at identifiyng new, bright and high-redshift QSOs in the Southern Hemisphere by applying customized machine learning methods (CCA, PRF and XGB) to photometric catalogs.  Its predictions allowed to double the number of known QSOs in the south;
- QSFit is a software tool for the automatic analysis of optical/IR spectra of AGN and QSOs, aimed at simplifying the development of specific analysis recipes, and to allow easy replicability of the results.  Its multi-epoch analysis capabilities allowed to detect (for the first time) the onset of the "big blue bump" component in a changing-look AGN.
Finally, I will show (once again!) how smooth is the transition between the astrophysicist's (or researcher's) and technologist's (or engineer's) work, and how the efforts to understand each other are extremely beneficial to the advancement of science.
